The 39 Clues: Storm Warning #9
I am now reading Storm Warning, which is number nine in the 39 Clues series. I think it is my favorite book in the series thus far. I think it is my favorite book because it is more interesting to me because it is about pirates. I really, REALLY like to read about pirates and watch movies about them. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, even though, I know that most students do not particularly like it. The book focuses on the female pirate, Anne Bonny, who dressed and fought like a man. She wore men's clothing and was a better fighter than most of the men pirates she worked with. She is famous for being one of the few women pirates; there are only two that I know of and the other one's name was Mary Reed. Anne Bonny is also famous for her link to the famous pirate, "Calico Jack" Rackam. In the book, Amy and Dan Cahill go the Carribean; specifically the Bahamas & Jamaica. Incidentally, I would LOVE to go there! I would like to visit to go to the beach, but I would also like to visit to experience the rich history of the area. Jamaica, especially, Port Royal, was the pirate capitol. Most of the famous pirates in history docked there and visited the taverns, but also they traded their goods and cashed in their loot. Sadly, Port Royal no longer exists. It was sunk sometime in the 1700's by both an earthquake and a tsunami. Amy and Dan are traveling with Nelly, their aupair; who is their babsitter or nanny. In the Bahamas, while exploring a cave, a gold chain with a bear claw attached to it. They know that is a clue somehow, but they do not know how it is linked to the clue hunt. They only know that the bear claw is the symbol of the Tomas clan. There are four main Cahill clans: The Ekaterinas, The Tomas, The Janus, and lastly The Lucians. There is also a secret clan, called the Madrigals; all of the other clans are afraid of them. I am on chapter 8 and Amy and Dan are headed back to Kingston, Jamaica to search for more clues; however they are unaware that Isabel, Ian, and Natalie Kabra are on their trail. Isabel is deadly, and would like nothing better than to kill Amy & Dan once and for all.

I just learned, through further reading, that I was wrong about the manner of the way Port Royal was destroyed! It was actually a city that was built on sand, so when the earthquake occured there were also HUGE tidal waves and 2/3 of the city sunk into quicksand!!! So sad,but also interesting and cool. Part of Port Royal does in fact still exist, but it is now a little fishing village. Amy and Dan visit the island and finally score a victory over the Kabras. Go Dan, Amy, & Nelly!!! It is about time...

ReplyDeleteI think Storm Warnig is very interesting and I have to agree that I'm a big fan for Historical fiction and I LOVE, LOVE pirates. So I'm determined to put this on my wish list for books. I like how the role of woman is of most importants of Anne Bonny in this book.It kind of reminds me of ''Pirates of the Carribean''.
ReplyDeleteI like this book because the role of the woman pirate is awsome and pirates.
So I'm determined to read it.

ReplyDeleteThis book sound intersting because i like to read exciting storys and adventures. I think I would like to read it because i like pirates. I think that it would be very fun to go to port royals. The worst part though is that you would get muged by pirates for your booty or loot. It would be fun because i like to read interresting and exciting stories.
ReplyDeletethis book sounds like a good book. i like to read about pirates. i think people who like pirates would like the book. i havce read some of the siers of 39 clues.i think that would also to be fun to go to port royal.
ReplyDeleteBrandt, what in particular sounds interesting about the book? Do you like to watch pirate movies? or have you read any books about pirates? Do you like history? Also, I have all of the 39 Clues series books in both audio book format and hardcover format. I don't yet have #10 yet in either format because it just came out. I will have it in both though, before the month of October is over. You are more than welcome to use them. ***Remember*** Amazon.com is a good place to purchase audio books inexpensively.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Mrs. Hightower
Cade, I really think that this series, The 39 Clues, would be a good series for you. They are realistic, adventure books that I know you would enjoy; especially since you like books like Swindle. Amy & Dan are able to do something I only dream of doing; travel the world! It would be so cool! However, they are in constant danger from their enemies, so I would not enjoy that part. Who would not want to hunt for treasure on a clue hunt, though?
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Mrs. Hightower
Thx 4 getting me hooked i think ill give the rest of the books a shot txh Mrs.Hightower

ReplyDeleteDevin,
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the violence appeals to you, but yes the danger they face from Isabel Kabra is real. She has tried to kill them several times in the series. She left them down in a pit of poisonous snakes, buried them alive in a cave, and even had the propellers of a plane aimed at them, inching ever closer. If you like books that put you on the edge of your seat, you would like these books.
Shelly,
ReplyDeleteThe book reminded me of "Pirates of the Carribean" also! I kept thinking about the similarities while reading. Anny Bonny was a real pirate and there are other books about her in the nonfiction section; probably of a large public library. I love historical fiction, especially about pirates, and I am glad you do too. The library has a book called "Pirates" by Celia Rees. It is ficitional, but it is based on Anny Boonny and Mary Reed. It is one of my favorite historical fiction books. Check it out!
Jared,
ReplyDeleteI hoped you have liked what you have read of the series so far, and I encourage you to continue reading the books! I have really liked them all, but this was my favorite. My other favorite is book #4, where they traveled to Egypt and visited the pyramids. I am about to start book 10, the final 39 Clues book.
Alisa,
ReplyDeleteAlthough pirates are not supernatural, they do have that otherworldly appeal to me. The pirate figure has become idealized as being this exciting, adventurous lifestyle; rich with gold and jewels and fighting other pirates. However, it really was a harsh way to live. That had rotten teeth, and diseases like scurvy. Scurvy was caused by a vitamin C deficiency, and it made their teeth fall out! I encourage you to read the book "Pirates" by Celia Rees and learn more.
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteIt is usually good to try something new, even if you think you might not like it. This book might not necessarily be for you, but you I encourage you to go outside of your reading comfort zone, and pick a different genre every now and then. I used to only read romance type stories, now I have discovered that I like fantasy, science fiction, sports books, and mysteries. Try something new, and you might just be surprised by the result!!!
I think this sounds like a good book, because I've heard from a lot of people that the 39 Clues' books are really good. I especially like that the book focuses on the female pirates. Sounds like a good book! <3
ReplyDeleteI am still reading the first and it just got good. I am very hooked now but havent got much to say about the book so far so "Read on" as you would say. Think i will get finished in a few weeks. Am still liking it and hope the books just keep geting better.
ReplyDeleteShelby,
ReplyDeleteI like books with strong female characters, too. Women have come a long way in the fight for equal rights, so I think it is important that females are fairly represented in young adult literature. I think you would you also like the book that I recommended to both Shelly & Devin. Keep reading!
Mrs. H.
I'd like to know more about the book "Pirates" that you recommended to Alisa. I'm not really into pirates, though. But I am wanting to try and get into different genres...so maybe that will be a good book for me.

The book you recommended to Alisa sounds good. I'd like to know more about it, though, because I am not all that into pirate books. But I am trying to get into reading different genres, so maybe that will be a good book for me.
